Rock type: Granite is a grainy-textured plutonic rock, rich in quartz, which contains more alkali feldspar than plagioclase. It is characterized by its mineral composition: quartz, potassium feldspars (orthose) and plagioclase, micas (biotite or muscovite). Granites and their associated rocks form most of the planet's continental crust. Unlike sedimentary rocks which form by the accumulation of debris or sediment on the Earth's surface, granite is a plutonic rock which forms by the underground solidification of magma.
